Job Description

 

The Vice President for International Business Development (VP) is responsible for raising major funding from American Corporations, Foundations, Public and Private Institutions. The VP will serve as the senior global account relationship manager for all assigned donor institutions.

 

This is a Chicago-based position.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Opportunity’s business strategy, footprint, structure, and unique selling points in markets where we work.  
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key management and fundraising staff within Opportunity to provide a framework for developing alignment on business development objectives and initiatives. 
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of assigned donor’s corporate giving, cause marketing and shared value strategies through research and relationship development within key donor staff and boards.  
  • Working with Opportunity’s marketing and communications team develop tailored strategies for assigned donors that lead to awareness, understanding and appreciation of Opportunity’s economic development business strategies, features and benefits.  
  • Build and manage a robust portfolio of corporate prospects. 
  • Identify best-fit, tailored funding solutions for Opportunity and the targeted institutions that lead to long term funding relationships. These solutions can involve any or all of the following engagement strategies that provide high value to the donor and to Opportunity: 
    1. Grants coming from corporations – CSR or foundations
    2. Business partnerships with corporations
    3. Multi-donor funded projects driven by a corporate relationship that might include other corporations, governments, foundations, and individual donors.
    4. Development of complex funding projects that may include grants, debt, program related investments and guarantees.  
  • Provide direction and support to Opportunity’s proposal development team in the development of high-quality winning proposals for assigned donors. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, marketing, economic development or equivalent experience.
  • Ten years of successful experience in complex-sales, business-development or major gift fundraising.
  • Experienced in closing gifts in the $1-3M range from institutional donors
  • Experience in business development in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, India, Indonesia, or China a major plus.
  • Experience in providing financial services at or near the bottom of the poverty pyramid preferred.
  • A disciplined approach to developing and maintaining strategic relationships with decision makers within institutional donors. Comfortable relating to C-Suite and senior leadership staff.
  • Discerning skills in determining when to involve other team members and senior leaders in the fundraising process.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, changing environment, maintaining a strong sense of urgency coupled with demonstrated success in management of multiple priorities.
  • Motivated, focused, driven and organized self-starter and team player.
  • Able to handle multiple projects and work in a complex network environment
  • Excellent presentation skills and outstanding follow-up acumen
  • Ability to work under pressure with persistence and perseverance
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
